Hilltop Healthy Lunch Series: Week 3

In our final week of the first series, we reviewed the importance of whole food, awareness of primary food (activities other than eating), and finally, we wrapped up with a discussion about sugar.  It’s hard for adults, much less children, to understand how much sugar is hidden in processed foods in addition to the amount we knowingly eat.  It’s also difficult, but crucial, to understand the effects that excessive amounts of sugar have on our bodies AND our minds.  Please check out the attached handout for more information and to review with your child:

We will be back in January for more healthy chats with Hilltop students, and hope you all have a wonderful holiday season.

THANK YOU again to Country Lakes Family Dental for sponsoring our last series and providing the awesome prizes to our volunteers!!

Hilltop Healthy Lunch Series Week 2: Primary Food

This week we talked with kids about other important activities and aspects of their daily lives OTHER than food.  We helped them to understand that eating is not an “activity we do” out of boredom, anger, sadness, etc.  We eat to nourish our bodies, but we can also “fill up” by being a good friend and family member, exercising, relaxing with a book or quiet time and showing gratitude.  Attached you will find a handout you can review with your child about primary food.

Also, a BIG thank you to Country Lakes Dental for sponsoring our series and providing the fabulous prizes the kids get so excited about!

Hilltop Healthy Lunch Series: Session 1 Review

First things first…

We are only visiting with grades 1st- 4th for now.  Please keep in mind we REALLY want to get wellness information in front of our students, but don’t want to make it difficult or time consuming for the parents OR teachers and staff.  So, squeezing this 10 minutes into their lunch periods once a week is a great option!

But if you do have a few spare minutes,

please review the handouts we share with your child so that you know what they’re learning, and how you can help them achieve their wellness goals!!

So…

WE HAD SESSION 1 OF our Hilltop Healthy Lunch Series last week!! The kids really listened, we had some brave volunteers (who received awesome prizes as a reward!) and we hope they left lunch with a better understanding of what WHOLE FOODS really are! Our CHALLENGE for them was to come up with a plan for incorporating more whole foods into their diet each day and bring that plan/ goal back to us this week, and specifically we challenged them to sub one packaged food out for for a veggie, fruit or nut/seed such as raw unsalted almonds, cashews or sunflower seeds.

AND,

we are not telling them that packaged foods are always bad, but that they should be limited in general daily, and also limited to the suggested serving size. We talked a lot about how your body understand and knows what to do with whole foods, so your hunger/full signals work better.  With packaged foods, we tend to feel hungry after one serving and go back for more.

Coming up…

We will be back on Wednesday to talk about creativity, exercise, relationships with family and friends… and how ALL of this promotes wellness!

Here is a handout

to go with last week’s material if you would like to share with your kiddos or review yourself.
